Backup and Disaster Recovery Solutions

We are all aware of the importance of backing up critical data from our servers, but the process of actually restoring after a disaster is perhaps less understood.

There are a number of options available for backing up critical servers, settings and data, each providing a different recovery method. To ensure your backup solution is actually providing the protection you need it is important to assess your requirements first.

There are basically two key numbers to assess before looking at a backup/recovery strategy – Recovery Point Objective, where recovery point is the point in time that your last backup was made; and Recovery Time Objective, where the recovery time is how long it takes to get your system back online after a failure.

Key questions:

·         What data would you lose in a server crash?

·         How much can be re-keyed or re-created?

·         Would your customers be severely inconvenienced by a data loss or delay?

·         What would this cost you on an hourly or daily basis?

·         What can’t you do in the event of a key server being off-line?

·         Will this severely impact your ability to do business and serve your customers?

·         What would this cost you on an hourly or daily basis?
